Is this suitable for me?

The above course outline should help you decide this. The course is fast paced but will be backed up with handouts other information. It is primarily aimed at intermediate to advanced players who have basic level of reading (mainly for the handouts as there will be too much information to just remember!) and technique. If you have any questions regarding your suitability for this course, please email: james@jameshester.co.uk

Who are the tutors?

James Hester (Mapex Biog):

From working with mystery Bristol trip hop duo Malakai (Island/ Universal Records, Domino Records) and Portishead honcho Geoff Barrow through to the heavier sound of Gunslinger Black (with Pitchshifters Mark Clayden and Matt Grundy), via Men From Mars which featured members of Robert Plants band The Strange Sensation, Massive Attack, Portishead and Cast – James knows how important it is to have the right tools to deliver whatever job is next, whether it’s playing Brixton Academy or a BBC session at Maida Vale. His current regular gig with post hardcore band Cars On Fire (Undergroove Records) has seen a new album written and recorded as a follow up to the KKKK (Kerrang) mini album ‘Dig Your Own Grave’, sessions for Red Bull, a UK tour, an album launch in Dublin and festival appearances at Sonisphere, Hevy, Guilfest and Relentless/Vans Boardmasters all in the first 3 months. James also balances this with his role as Head Of Drums at the Bristol Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) where he completed his PG Cert (Ed) and is now studying the process of coordination related to auditory, visual and kinesthetic response for an MA, is the Technical Editor for Drummer Magazine, is currently writing and recording at his own studio with bass player Damon Minchella (Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, The Who) and has published his first book, ‘Mind Over Meter’.

Tim Brown (Mapex Biog):

Tim first started playing the drums at the age of eight in his home town of Leicester UK, he soon after went on to perform in many local bands in all styles from Jazz to Metal. In the early 90’s Tim Graduated at Drumtech London and later continued his studies with US drum guru Jim Chapin, Zoro ( Lenny Kravitz ), Pete Riley ( Keith Emerson, Republica) , Malcolm Garrett ( Birmingham Conservatoire) and Colin Woolway (Drumsense founder, Suzi Quattro).

Tim has performed and recorded throughout the UK and Europe with a wide range of artistes including Aynsley Lister, Nickolodeon, Downtothebone, The four tops, The Drifters , Sally Barker and the Rhythm, Mother Hubbard, Vivid, The Sarah Bennett Quartet and Mandy Reilly to name a few, he is also a very busy Drum teacher / clinician and taught at many Schools and Colleges and on courses such as the IDF Rhythm Course and Access to music.

Both James and Tim are endorsers of Mapex/Paiste/Vic Firth/Protection Racket/Baskey
